- DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Each patient is to be controlled individually. It should be consumed with at least 1/2 cup of water and unchewed. This drug is orally administered once a day. This drug should be taken before breakfast or the first meal. It is very crucial not to skip a meal after taking the drug.
1. Single treatment
1) Initial dosage and volume: For patient who have not taken drug before, treatment starts with 1mg of glimepride once a day. When necessary, dosage is increased by 1mg with 1 ～ 2 weeks apart. Generally there is no additional effect in administering 4 mg or more, a few patients have shown better metabolism by increasing the dose to 6 mg(or 8 mg). If daily administration of 4 mg fails, conversion to insulin therapy must be considered primarily and if not, combination with insulin or other oral diabetic drug must be considered.
2) Secondary dose control: As treatment progresses, glucose control may improve and requirement of this drug may decline. Therefore reduction or cessation may be required to avoid hypoglycemia. Dose control must be considered in case body weight loss, alteration in lifestyle, other factors that may increase risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia occurs.
3) Conversion from other oral hypoglycemic agent: There is no previse dose-correlation between this drug and other oral hypoglycemic agent. When converting from other oral hypoglycemic agent to this drug, it is recommended to follow method mentioned in initial dosage part. That is; start with 1 mg a day and control the dose 1 ～ 2 weeks apart. Effect and duration of the previous drug must be considered.
4) Administration control: When taking the drug, blood glucose or/and urine glucose must be measured regularly, and regular measurement of glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) is recommended. Generally hypoglycemia is immediately controlled by consuming glucose. When sulfonylurea-type medication is administered, hypoglycemia may occur despite successful early management. Therefore patient should be observed carefully. For severe hypoglycemia, spontaneous management by doctor and follow-up is required and hospitalization may be necessary from time to time.
2. Combined treatment
1) Combined treatment with insulin: Combined treatment of this drug with insulin is applied on secondary failure patient and if fasting glucose (FBG) is over 150 mg/dL, combined usage with insulin should be prescribed. This drug is administered 8 mg once a day with the first meal of the day, and insulin should start with low-dose and be increased weekly based on fasting glucose measurement. If stable, capillary glucose ought to be monitered everyday. It is necessary to regulary control insulin dosage based on glucose and glycosylated hemogolin measurements.
2) Combined treatment with metformin: If patient is not appropriately responsive to maximum dose of this drug, metformin may be added. There is clinical evidence on combined treatment of other sulfonylurea drugs like Glibenclamide, glipizide, chlorpropamide, tolbutamide and metformin. In combined treatment of this drug and metformin, controlling each drug dosage may allow patient to reach their wated glucose. However efforts should be made to learn minimum effective dose of each drug for glucose control. In combined medication of this drug and metformin, risk of hypoglycemia exists or may even increase. It must be cautioned.

2. This drug administered in combination in following conditions.
1) If glucose control is insufficient with oral hypoglycemic agent, it can be administered with insullin
2) If sole sulfonylurea or metformin medication does not control glucose level sufficiently, this drug is adminstered with metformin
